Using your iPad mini to Audition for Voiceovers

Ingredients:

1- Apple Camera Connector

1-USB Microphone for around $100, or less.

1-downloaded version of the Garage Band app

  1. Plug an Apple Camera Connector for the lightning charger port.
  2. Plug your USB Microphone (I use a Blue Snowball) into the USB end of the Camera Connector.
  3. Open the Garage Band app, and touch the “+” symbol in the far upper left corner of the screen.
  4. Touch the Audio Recorder (microphone graphic in the middle of the screen) option.
  5. Next, touch the little Cable Input on the near upper left corner of the screen. Turn on the Nose Gate slider, and adjust the slider underneath to help cancel out background noise (this will take some trial and error listening back to some recordings you’ve done to find the sweet spot for your microphone. For me, it’s only about an eighth to a sixth of the way from the left side. If it’s up too high, it will sound very amateurish, with the white noise in the background obviously cutting in and out. You want it to sound almost seamless between when you’re talking and when you’re not).
  6. Adjust the Volume here as well, if need be, or leave on automatic.
  7. Get out of that drop down menu, and press the little Metronome picture in the upper middle right of the screen, so that it turns to grey, not blue. This way, you don’t have it clicking throughout your recording. It will still give you a silent four count before it starts recording.
  8. Now, touch the “+” symbol to the far right of the Ruler. Turn Automatic version of the slider on, so that it will match your recording.
  9. You are now ready to record!
  10. Repeat these steps for additional takes.
